When I was a high school student, I would often sit down at the breakfast table to find a nice bowl of Korean food (how I miss those days…) sitting next to a freshly clipped newspaper article. I almost expected them after a few times. Every Monday was the day that the Korean newspaper covered Education. Which basically translates to - SATs, College Admissions, and AP classes. No joke, I read multiple articles that listed newly minted Harvard and Yale students’ 4-year high school transcripts and classes. The underlying message was: follow their example and you too will go to Hah-vahd. This is the formula. I groaned whenever my mom would clip these for me. She soon realized I was barely skimming over these, so in her brilliance she did me one better and started pinning them to my corkboard. At some point I cornered her with a clipping, “Why?!” to which she’d answer “because I love you!”
Well fast forward seven years, and you can imagine the horror I realized when I found myself reading this article and then copying and pasting the link right into an email to my 15-year-old brother without thinking twice. The modernized version of a nice breakfast with a side of “how to get into college - four easy steps!”
I am my mother’s daughter…I have absorbed her habits, her strengths, and weaknesses. Sorry David, you’ll probably be getting more articles from me…because I love you!
